XPERTSTEM CoreSTEM Challenge

XPERTSTEM CoreSTEM Challenge is an international STEAM competition where students solve real-world problems using science, mathematics, technology, engineering, data, sustainability, and society.

It is not only a coding challenge. Students investigate, observe, test, reason, decide, design, model, and create evidence-based solutions. The goal is to move from knowing science to reasoning across disciplines, deciding with evidence, and creating real solutions.

General Objectives

  • Enhance problem-solving: Think critically and build logical solutions under time pressure.
  • Develop interdisciplinary thinking: Combine science, math, data, technology, engineering, sustainability, and society.
  • Build algorithmic thinking: Design efficient, optimized, and testable solutions.
  • Improve technical proficiency: Write clean, fast, accurate, and sustainable solutions.
  • Promote evidence-based decisions: Support ideas with data, observation, testing, and modeling.
  • Encourage healthy competition: Test skills against peers in an ethical and engaging environment.
  • Create real-world impact: Turn solutions into products, models, prototypes, reports, data analyses, or apps.

Thematic Ideas

Themes are not limited to coding. Each theme integrates scientific discovery, mathematics and data, technology and computing, engineering and design, and society, ethics, and communication.

  • Scientific Discovery: Biology, life sciences, earth and environmental science, astronomy, and space science.
  • Mathematics & Data: Mathematical reasoning, statistics, probability, modeling, and data interpretation.
  • Technology & Computing: Coding, algorithms, AI, data science, and cybersecurity.
  • Engineering & Design: Robotics, structures, systems, prototyping, and optimization.
  • Society, Ethics & Communication: Scientific literacy, ethics, risk, sustainability, and science communication.
  • Combinatorics & Number Theory: Permutations, prime numbers, modular arithmetic.
  • Graph Theory: Shortest path, cycle detection, network connectivity.
  • Computational Geometry: Closest pair of points, convex hull.
  • Gaming AI: Program the most effective AI opponent in a turn-based game.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Sentiment analysis, video summarization, or image recognition.
  • Sustainability & Social Good: Track carbon emissions or design a recycling platform.
  • Mobile & Web Apps: Build an app for local communities or educational access.
  • Fintech: Personal budgeting, peer-to-peer lending, or crypto trading tools.

Mission Universe — 15 Worlds, 3 Pillars

Instead of fifteen science units, learners enter fifteen problem worlds. Each pillar holds five mission worlds. Every grade level moves through one mission from each pillar.

How Age-Appropriate Scope Is Enforced

Each grade band has a vocabulary and cognitive demand cap. Every learning outcome also includes two required fields:

  • Grade-Level Scope: Exactly which materials, data types, numbers, and reasoning steps are fair for that age.
  • Not Assessable: Concepts, calculations, or techniques that exceed the grade band and must never appear in a question.

This makes the age cap an enforceable boundary at each outcome level. A Grade 5 flood-risk question and a Grade 11 flood-risk question can share a title without sharing a difficulty level.

Outcome Design Formula

ACTION + STEAM CONTENT + REAL-WORLD SCENARIO + EVIDENCE / PRODUCT

Every outcome includes:

  • An action
  • STEAM content
  • A real-world scenario
  • Evidence or a product

This formula turns XPERTSTEM CoreSTEM Challenge from a simple test or coding contest into an international STEAM experience that builds scientific thinking, data literacy, design, ethics, and innovation.
